# Google Ads

> Read Google Ads accounts, manager accounts, campaigns, ad groups and performance metrics in Hebno. Hebno reads only and never changes campaigns.

The Google Ads integration brings paid search performance into your client work. Ask how Contoso's price-match campaign performed in October, which search terms drove conversions, or how cost per conversion moved week on week, and Hebno answers from Google Ads with each account and campaign cited. Hebno reads Google Ads with your own access and never changes campaigns, budgets, bids or ads.

## At a glance

| | |
| - | - |
| **Connection** | Personal connection. Each member connects their own Google account. |
| **Default access** | Read only |
| **Attach** | Google Ads accounts, campaigns, ad groups |
| **Search** | Hebno searches Google Ads when a request mentions a campaign, ad group, keyword, search terms, clicks, cost, conversions or return on ad spend |
| **Link** | A project links to a Google Ads account and, optionally, to campaigns |
| **Write** | None. Hebno reads only. |

## Before you start

You need:

* A Google account with access to the Google Ads accounts you want to read, either directly or through a manager account. Any access level except **Email only** can read through the API, and **Read only** is enough.
* An allowed integration. An owner or admin sets **Google Ads** to **Allow** under **Admin → Connectors → Catalogue**.
* Trust for Hebno in your Google Workspace if a super admin restricts third-party apps. See [Google Workspace admin](https://hebno.com/docs/integrations/google-workspace-admin.md).

Hebno requests this OAuth scope:

| Scope | Why Hebno needs it |
| - | - |
| `https://www.googleapis.com/auth/adwords` | Read accounts, campaigns, ad groups, ads, keywords and metrics through the Google Ads API. Google offers only this one scope for Google Ads, and Hebno uses it for read requests only. |
| `openid`, `email` | Identify the Google account you connect |

Hebno reads with Google Ads Query Language (GAQL) search requests and sends no mutate requests, so nothing in your accounts changes.

## Connect Google Ads

**1. Start the connection**

Open **Settings → Connections**, find **Google Ads** under **Marketing and advertising** and select **Connect**. You can also select **Connect** from the prompt in a chat.

**2. Sign in to Google**

Sign in with the Google account you use for Google Ads, review the access on the consent screen and select **Continue**.

**3. Choose accounts**

Hebno lists the accounts your Google account can open, grouped under their manager accounts. Choose which ones Hebno may read, or leave **All accessible accounts** selected.

The card shows **Connected** with your Google account email and the number of Google Ads accounts. Hebno reads with your own access, so you see only the accounts and campaigns your Google Ads user can open. Tokens are encrypted at rest. Select **Disconnect** at any time, or ask an admin to revoke the connection under **Admin → Connectors → Connections**.

## What Hebno reads

| Google Ads object | Fields Hebno uses | Typical questions |
| - | - | - |
| **Account** (customer) | Customer ID, descriptive name, currency, time zone, status, manager account | "Which Contoso accounts do we manage under our manager account?" |
| **Campaign** | Name, status, advertising channel type, bidding strategy, budget amount, start and end dates | "Which Contoso campaigns are running this month?" |
| **Ad group** | Name, status, campaign, type, default bid | "Which ad groups in the price-match campaign are paused?" |
| **Ad and asset** | Ad type, headlines, descriptions, final URL, status, policy approval status | "What headlines are running in the own-brand ad group?" |
| **Keyword and search term** | Keyword text, match type, quality score, search term, matched keyword | "Which search terms drove conversions last week?" |
| **Metrics** | Impressions, clicks, CTR, average CPC, cost, conversions, conversion value, cost per conversion, search impression share, by date, device and network | "How did cost per conversion change from September to October?" |

Reads are live. Hebno queries Google Ads when a request needs it and states the date range and account currency behind each figure. Conversion figures for recent days can rise as Google Ads records conversions within each conversion window, so a figure for yesterday may differ when you ask again next week. Only what a reply used is stored with the conversation as its sources.

> [!WARNING]
>
> Excerpts a reply uses, including spend and conversion figures, become part of the conversation. Anyone you share the conversation with can read them.

## Hebno reads only

Hebno does not write to Google Ads. It never creates, edits, pauses or removes campaigns, ad groups, ads or keywords, changes budgets or bids, applies recommendations, or changes account access and billing settings. To act on what Hebno finds, make the change in Google Ads.

## Link a project to a Google Ads account

Linking marks which Google Ads account belongs to a client engagement, so you can ask "how is paid search doing?" without naming the account.

1. Open the project and select **Brain**.
2. Under **Linked records**, select **Link record**, then **Google Ads**.
3. Search by account name or customer ID, for example `123-456-7890`, and select the account. To narrow the link, select the campaigns that belong to the engagement.

In chats tagged to the project, Hebno starts with the linked account and campaigns for any advertising question. See [Linked records](https://hebno.com/docs/projects/linked-records.md).

## Use Google Ads in chat

* **Attach**: open the **+** menu, choose **Sources → Google Ads**, and pick an account, a campaign or an ad group. Or type `/` and choose **Google Ads**.

* **Ask**: name the client, campaign and period in your request. For example:

  > Summarise Contoso's paid search performance for October by campaign: cost, conversions and cost per conversion, compared with September.

  > Which search terms in the price-match campaign spent the most last week without a conversion?

  > Build a table of impression share by campaign for the last four weeks for the Contoso pricing review readout.

* **Research runs** show a **Checking Google Ads** step, with a chip for each account and campaign it read.

* **Agents** can read Google Ads on a schedule, for example a Monday summary of last week's spend and conversions for each linked client account.

## Troubleshooting

| Symptom | Fix |
| - | - |
| **NOT\_ADS\_USER** when you connect | The Google account you signed in with has no Google Ads access. Reconnect with the account that is a user on your Google Ads accounts. |
| **USER\_PERMISSION\_DENIED** for a client account | Your access to that account comes through a manager account you did not select. Open the card under **Settings → Connections** and add the manager account. |
| **CUSTOMER\_NOT\_ENABLED** | The account is cancelled or has not finished setup in Google Ads. Choose a different account. |
| An account is missing from the list | Your user has **Email only** access, or the invitation to the account is not accepted. Ask an account admin in Google Ads to change your access. |
| Figures differ from the Google Ads interface | Check the date range, time zone and conversion columns. Hebno reports in the account's time zone and uses the **Conversions** column unless you name another. |
| Requests fail with **RESOURCE\_EXHAUSTED** | Google Ads limits request volume. Wait a few minutes and retry, or narrow the date range or the number of accounts. |
