# PitchBook

> Read PitchBook companies, deals, investors, funds and comparables in Hebno, with short cited excerpts that respect your PitchBook licence.

The PitchBook integration brings private market data into due diligence and strategy work. Ask who owns a competitor of Contoso Retail, what similar retail businesses sold for, or which funds are active in the sector, and Hebno answers from PitchBook with each company, deal and figure cited. An owner or admin connects PitchBook once for the organisation. Hebno reads only and never writes to PitchBook.

## At a glance

| | |
| - | - |
| **Connection** | Organisation connection, made by an owner or admin. |
| **Default access** | Read only. Deal values and valuations are visible to owners and admins until you share them with teams. |
| **Attach** | Companies, deals, investors, funds, comparable sets |
| **Search** | Hebno searches PitchBook when a request mentions ownership, a transaction, a valuation, an investor, a fund or comparable companies |
| **Link** | A project links to a PitchBook company |
| **Write** | None. Hebno reads only. |

## Before you start

You need:

* An owner or admin role in Hebno.
* A PitchBook licence that includes API access. Your PitchBook account team provisions it.
* The API key for that licence. A PitchBook administrator at your firm copies it from the PitchBook API portal.

Hebno sends the key as a `PB-Token` in the authorisation header and reads these PitchBook API resources:

| Resource | Why Hebno needs it |
| - | - |
| Companies | Read profiles, ownership status, financing status, industry, employees and financials where PitchBook has them |
| Deals | Read deal type, date, size, valuation, investors and acquirers |
| Investors and funds | Read investor profiles, investments, fund size, vintage and status |
| People | Read executives and board members linked to companies and investors |
| Comparables | Read comparable company sets and the metrics PitchBook shows for them |
| Search | Match company names and websites in a request to PitchBook IDs |

> [!NOTE]
>
> PitchBook licenses its data to named users. Under **Who can use it**, choose only the teams whose members hold PitchBook seats. Hebno quotes the figures a reply needs, cites each one to PitchBook, and does not export PitchBook datasets in full into deliverables, spreadsheets or the library.

## Connect PitchBook

**1. Allow the integration**

Open **Admin → Connectors → Catalogue**, find **PitchBook** under **Company and market data**, and set it to **Allow**.

**2. Connect the organisation**

Select **Connect**, paste the API key, then select **Test connection**. Hebno checks the key and lists the resources your licence includes.

**3. Choose teams and data areas**

Under **Who can use it**, pick the teams with PitchBook seats. Under **Data areas**, choose what members can see. See [Data areas](#data-areas).

**4. Check access**

**Access** is **Read only**. Select **Save**.

The card shows **Connected** with your PitchBook account name. Members in the selected teams can use PitchBook in chat straight away.

## Data areas

Data areas control what members of the allowed teams can see through the organisation connection. They apply on top of what your PitchBook licence includes.

| Data area | Includes | Default |
| - | - | - |
| **Companies** | Profile, industry, headquarters, employees, ownership and financing status, executives | All allowed teams |
| **Deals and valuations** | Deal type, date, size, pre-money and post-money valuation, multiples | Owners and admins |
| **Investors and funds** | Investor profiles, portfolio, fund size, vintage, dry powder | All allowed teams |
| **Company financials** | Revenue, EBITDA and other financials PitchBook reports | Owners and admins |
| **Comparables** | Comparable sets and their metrics | All allowed teams |

An organisation connection with team access and data areas. Financial figures default to owners and admins.

To share deal values with the strategy team, open the PitchBook card in **Admin → Connectors**, select **Deals and valuations** and add the team.

## What Hebno reads

| PitchBook object | Fields Hebno uses | Typical questions |
| - | - | - |
| **Company** | Name, PitchBook ID, description, primary industry, headquarters, employees, ownership status, last financing | "Who owns the main challenger to Contoso Retail?" |
| **Deal** | Deal type, date, deal size, valuation, lead investors, acquirer, status | "What did the last UK grocery buyout go for?" |
| **Investor** | Name, type, assets under management, investments, preferred industries | "Which investors are most active in UK retail?" |
| **Fund** | Fund name, size, vintage, status, manager | "What is the size and vintage of the acquirer's latest fund?" |
| **Comparable set** | Companies in the set, revenue, EBITDA, valuation multiples | "How does Contoso's peer group trade on EV to revenue?" |
| **Person** | Name, title, company, board seats | "Who is on the challenger's board?" |

A PitchBook company profile attached to a chat.

Reads are live. Hebno queries PitchBook when a request needs it and does not copy PitchBook data into Hebno. Only the excerpts a reply used are stored with the conversation as its sources, each cited to the PitchBook record.

> [!WARNING]
>
> Excerpts a reply uses become part of the conversation. Share conversations that contain PitchBook excerpts only with people your PitchBook licence covers.

## What Hebno writes

Hebno does not write to PitchBook. It does not create lists, save searches, change alerts or download PitchBook reports. To keep a company in view for an engagement, link it to the project as described below.

```mermaid theme={"system"}
sequenceDiagram
  participant You
  participant Hebno
  participant PitchBook
  You->>Hebno: What have UK grocery businesses sold for since 2023?
  Hebno->>PitchBook: Search deals by industry, region and date
  PitchBook-->>Hebno: Eight deals with sizes and valuations
  Hebno->>PitchBook: Read the target company for each deal
  PitchBook-->>Hebno: Profiles and multiples
  Hebno-->>You: Table of deals, each figure cited
```

## Link a project to a company

Linking marks which PitchBook company belongs to a project, so you can ask "who are the comparables?" without naming the client or target.

1. Open the project and select **Brain**.
2. Under **Linked records**, select **Link record**, then **PitchBook**.
3. Search by company name, website or PitchBook ID and select the company. Repeat for targets or competitors in the engagement.

In chats tagged to the project, Hebno starts with the linked companies for any question about ownership, deals or comparables. See [Linked records](https://hebno.com/docs/projects/linked-records.md).

## Use PitchBook in chat

* **Attach**: open the **+** menu, choose **Sources → PitchBook**, and pick a company, deal, investor, fund or comparable set. Or type `/` and choose **PitchBook**.

* **Ask**: name the company, sector or investor in your request. For example:

  > Profile the three challengers in the Contoso pricing review: ownership, last deal and backers.

  > List UK grocery and convenience deals since 2023 with deal size and EV to EBITDA where PitchBook has it.

  > Which private equity firms have bought UK retailers in the last two years, and how large are their current funds?

* **Research runs** show a **Checking PitchBook** step, with a chip for each company, deal and investor it read.

* **Agents** can read PitchBook on a schedule, for example a monthly digest of deals among linked competitors. Writes an agent proposes elsewhere appear in [agent approvals](https://hebno.com/docs/automate/agent-approvals.md) for review.

## Troubleshooting

| Symptom | Fix |
| - | - |
| **Test connection** fails with **401 Unauthorized** | The key is wrong or was rotated. Copy the current key from the PitchBook API portal and connect again. |
| A resource returns **403 Forbidden** | Your PitchBook licence does not include that data. Ask your PitchBook account team to check the API entitlement. |
| Deal values or valuations are missing | The member's team is not in the **Deals and valuations** data area, or the value is undisclosed in PitchBook. |
| A company is not found | Search by website or PitchBook ID, which match more reliably than a trading name. |
| Requests fail with **429 Too Many Requests** | PitchBook limits requests for each key. Hebno retries after a short wait. If the daily limit is reached, requests work again the next day. |
| A member cannot see PitchBook in chat | Their team is not under **Who can use it**. Add the team if its members hold PitchBook seats. |
