# Create a project

> Set up a project for a client engagement, add members and roles, and tag chats so work is attached to the right client.

A project is the workspace for one client engagement. It groups chats, files, instructions, linked sources and agents, and it sets which client every chat in it is working for.

## Create a project

**1. Open Projects**

Select **Projects** in the sidebar. The page lists **Active** and **Archived** projects with counts. A new organisation shows "No projects yet. Create one to collect files and sessions for a client engagement."

**2. Select New project**

Enter a **Name**, for example "Target commercial due diligence". Add the **Client (optional)**, for example "Apex Ventures Ltd". The client name appears on exports and client-facing files.

**3. Select Create project**

You become the project's first admin. Open **Brain** to add instructions, files and linked sources.

## Project tabs

| Tab | What it contains |
| - | - |
| **Sessions** | Chats tagged to the project, with **New chat**. Each chat is **Shared** or **Private** |
| **Brain** | **Instructions & context**, **Files**, **Templates**, linked sources and linked records. See [Project brain](https://hebno.com/docs/projects/project-brain.md) |
| **Agents** | Personal and organisation agents attached to this project |
| **Settings** | **Details**, **Members** and **Archive**. Project admins see this tab |

Sessions that people mark **Private** are hidden from teammates. The **Agents** tab lists only the agents for this project. **New agent** opens the same form as **Agents** in the sidebar with the project already selected, and its **Connected sources** match the **Brain** tab. See [Agents](https://hebno.com/docs/automate/agents.md).

## Details and colour

Open **Settings → Details** to change the **Name**, **Client**, description and colour. Choose a preset colour or enter a hex value. The colour appears as a line beside the project in your list and in the sidebar, so client work is easy to tell apart.

## Members and project roles

**Settings → Members** shows who works on the project ("Admins can add and remove members and change roles").

| Role | Can do |
| - | - |
| **Admin** | Open **Settings**, edit details, add and remove members, change roles, edit **Instructions & context**, upload and delete files, add templates, link and unlink sources and records |
| **Member** | Open the project, read **Brain**, use its files in chat, run sessions, save a message or deliverable to the project |

To add someone, select the people, choose a role and select **Add**. Change a role from the dropdown on the person's row. Remove a person with the delete button on their row.

A project always has at least one admin. Promote someone else before you remove or demote the last admin. Organisation owners and admins can manage every project. Each person you add gets the notification **I am added to a project**. See [Roles and permissions](https://hebno.com/docs/concepts/roles-and-permissions.md).

> [!NOTE]
>
> Project roles set who administers a project. A member of the organisation
> can still read the project's sessions and files unless the session is marked
> **Private**.

## Tag chats to the project

Tags set which client a chat serves.

1. Select **New chat** and choose the **Team** and **Project** tags above the composer. Hebno selects your team when you belong to one.
2. Send your message. Hebno loads the project's instructions, files, linked sources and linked records on every turn.
3. Open **Brain** in the chat header to review or edit them without leaving the thread.

### Sticky tags

Change or clear the project until you send the first message. After that the tags are fixed, so a chat cannot move to another client's project halfway through and limits remain attributed to the right engagement. To tag a chat you started with no project, choose **Attach to a project** in the header, or save its first deliverable to a project.

If a follow-up reads like a different client, Hebno suggests **New chat** so each client's material is separate. See [Start a chat](https://hebno.com/docs/chat/start-a-chat.md).

## Archive a project

**Settings → Archive** hides the project from the sidebar and excludes it from new chats and agents. Restore it at any time from the **Archived** list. Existing chats and files are unchanged.
